Selling Is Not Selfish (a Rant)

Riddle for you:

Why do so many entrepreneurs start businesses with a mission to help people and then shortly after think that “helping people” is slimy?

Answer:

Because they think that selling is slimy. And they think that by pitching their offer, they’re coming off too strong.

So they don’t ask for the sale. They don’t follow up on leads. They don’t tell the world about their amazing service or product because they believe the lie that selling is slimy and selfish.

Maybe it stems from a fear of rejection. Or maybe they want to protect their reputation and relationships. Whatever it is, if you’re one of those entrepreneurs who think selling is slimy and selfish, with all due respect, you’re wrong.

Because selling your stuff? It’s not about you. It’s about the people who benefit from what you offer. In fact, we could even turn the argument around and say that NOT selling yourself is slimy and selfish. Because now you’re robbing people of the transformation they could have had from working with you.

And if this is a hard pill to swallow, just know that it’s the same pill I choked on for years (10, to be exact) before it finally went down.

Selling yourself isn’t about YOU. And when you shift your focus from “I’m selling you my stuff” to “I’m serving you,” your fears of rejection and reputational damage fizzle out.

Because your mission is to serve people. You’re not selling them a new set of olivewood handle stainless steel steak knives—handmade in the French Alps—that they don’t even need. You’re selling them your unique solution to their very real, very visceral problem.

So again, with all due respect, if selling makes you throw up in your mouth, drink some ginger tea and stop being selfish. Got it? Great.

Now with that pep talk/rant out of the way, let’s get down to business and talk about your sales process.

The best thing you can do to start selling more (confidently) is to have a crystal clear, smooth-as-a-baby’s-butt sales process. Unfortunately though, lots of entrepreneurs are hobbling along with a wonky sales system.

Here Are 10 Signs Something’s Off In Your Sales Process:

1.  You frequently hear, “I don’t have the budget for this right now.”

2. You’re constantly changing and negotiating your rates with leads.

3. You haven’t codified your signature method that takes clients from A to B.

4. You pitch your services using copy/pasted descriptions from a Google doc.

5. You don’t have shareable or even share-worthy case studies to grease the sale.

6. You don’t have a reliable event like a masterclass or workshop to convert leads.

7. Your external-facing marketing assets are generic templates that make you look amateur and don’t mesh with your personality.

8. Your project proposals are Google Docs saved as PDFs.

9. You “welcome” new clients with bricks-of-text emails and docs to “help” them get started.

10. You send generic, wholly uninspiring invoices when it’s time to get paid.

If the duct tape you slapped over your sales collateral is coming off—or if you sense that your sales process is just barely limping along, then I made you something.
