What makes a lead magnet good?

I wish more people asked this question because I’ve downloaded my fair share of mediocre lead magnets over the years. You probably have too. At the most basic level, a good lead magnet should do 3 things:

What makes a good lead magnet?

✔️ It should provide a quick win for your audience. Give them instant gratification, which helps people build trust with you because you’ve positioned yourself as someone who can solve their problems.

✔️ It should have a high perceived (and actual) value. It cannot look free. It should feel like an unfair value exchange (“I can’t believe Hannah gave this away for free!”). This is another one of those subtle psychological ways you build trust with people and create a solid first-ish impression.

✔️ It should be specific. The broader you go, the more diluted your impact. Remember, you’re going for a quick win. An unabridged encyclopedia on your area of expertise isn’t exactly actionable.

If you look at all the freebie failures littering the internet, most of them failed because they were too long, too broad, too basic, or too ugly.
