I’ve been browsing social media a lot during my spring break. (Your girl needs a little IG break between those home decor Pinterest marathons.) And I noticed a trend that caught my attention: #socialmediaisfake
After reading so many vulnerable posts from people sharing the unfiltered realities behind their perfectly manicured news feeds, I decided to ride the trend and get vulnerable with you today.
And I’m going to do that in two ways:
- By sharing a personal story with you
- By giving you complete transparency on our DBK product roadmap
Life-Altering Advice Moment
You might be surprised to know that, for the longest time, “selling myself” was one of my biggest fears and challenges. A lifetime of bullying and emotional trauma had made me petrified at the idea of putting myself out there and risking being rejected or ridiculed.
Although I overcame this “fear” enough to succeed as a business owner, I know in my heart of hearts that this “fear” stunted my growth and held me back for YEARS. Until one day, someone gave me one of the most life-altering pieces of wisdom I’ve ever received: GET OVER YOURSELF.
I know. I was jolted out of my seat too. But I decided to GET OVER this apparently offensive advice and listen on. This person went on to explain that selling myself is:
👎 Not about me learning to become more confident
👎 Not about me getting over my insecurities
👎 Not about me “faking it until I make it”
👎 Not about me. Period.
It’s about:
👍 The people I’m meant to serve
👍 The lives I’m meant to change
👍 The legacy I’m meant to leave
👍 The God-given gifts I’m meant to share
Your purpose is too big and your calling is too strong to be stunted by “silly” insecurities. And every day you waste hiding and playing small, you miss an opportunity to serve someone who needs the exact thing that ONLY YOU can give them.
It may sound cheesy but it’s true: selling = serving. And underselling yourself = doing the world and the people who need you a huge disservice.
